Winter
Solitude at Aylmer Marina on a Spring night?
Spring, where is spring? It seems to have disappeared this year. Winter has it's grip on Ottawa this year, tonight it will get to below -16 with the winds ... crazy. I drove out to Aylmer Marina today hoping to find some cracks in the ice on the river, to see signs of the river and spring. No where to be seen today. Ah well, it will come one of these days. :)

After a little bit of wet feet ... a New Birch Stand Emerged
With the spring thaw starting to get closer with each passing day, I am spending my weekends out driving around looking for new and interesting scenes to capture. I found a nice birch cluster to photograph today, but while making my way out to the trees I kept going through the top layer of frozen snow to the water underneath. My feet got soaked, but it was an enjoyable day just the same.

Blue Blue Sky over the Ottawa River
The ice near the shoreline of the Ottawa river is still nice and thick, but soon it will melt from below, causing unpredictable ice thickness. I know the depth of the water in this area, so even if I happen to go through the ice it is less than waist deep. Definitely don't want to venture out too far from shore.

Sunny Afternoon on the Ottawa River
Spring is getting closer, little by little. Today it was just over 0 degrees out. I was walking along the shoreline of the Ottawa River, looking for signs of the river ice starting to break up and cause jams. Looking for nteresting formations of the ice ridges. I love how the ice collapses on top of the rocks, as the water underneath the ice lowers, exposing rocks near the shoreline.

Follow The Deer Tracks To The Sunrise
While out making my way through waist deep snow in a small birch stand, I came across a set of deer tracks making it's way through the forest, deeper into the woods. It's amazing that such a large animal can make such little noise when bounding through a forest.

Winter Birch Pano Badness
Taken just after sunrise, the clouds on the horizon blocked the sun for the first few minutes, then as the sun rose, it started to break through the clouds. Small birch trees fill this small space south of the Ottawa airport.

Standing Out From The Crowd
This is a multi-row, multi-column panoramic image that has been cropped down to a square crop that is over 50" wide/tall at 300 dpi. While combining all of the seperate images together the image was at one point over 50gb in size. Taken at sunrise just south of the airport in Ottawa, this small stand of Birch trees is one of my favourite local spots to sneak out to.

Blue Hour on the Ice at Aylmer Marina
long exposure taken after the sun has set on the ice at Aylmer Marina in Quebec. There were a number of fishing huts on the ice, even a full size truck, so the ice is nice and thick, not that I would want to be standing on the ice near the truck though ... LOL!

Mer Bleue Pre-Dawn Blue Hour Panoramic
I really love how the last hints of blue hour provided a lovely soft pastel blue backdrop to the fresh snow cover on the ground. This is a two row, multi column panoramic image that has been blended into a very high resolution image capable of being printed up to 8' wide while remaining extremely sharp and clear.

Happiness is ... Hiking into the Backcountry for Blue Hour
After capturing a few different versions of the sky during blue hour, it was time to hike back out. It was long after dark with no moon, so I needed to put on my headlamp. While I was hiking back out, I couldn't help but notice how the fresh snow was sparkling as my headlamp lit it up... Wonderful and Serene ...

Blue Hour Pre-Sunrise at Mer Bleue
Eager to get out shooting, I ventured out to Mer Bleue in hopes of some morning colours during sunrise. Unfortunatel, the cloud cover was just too thick, and the colours never came out. This shot was taken during the last phase of pre-dan blue hour.

Incoming Snow Squall - Get Ready ...
Snowshoeing out at Petrie Island just before the snow squal hit. I was loving how the sunshine just before sunset during the golden hour was lighting up the fast moving clouds.

Heavy Winds - Snow Squal - Sunset | Triple Hit
I was battling all of the odds trying to capture this shot. My tripod leg broke off again after trying to fix it temporarily while I wait for a replacement part. But, determined as usual, I trekked on through the deep wind blown snowdrifts determined to get a couple of shots on this Sunday afternoon. The winds were strong and I was hoping for some shots of the snow blowing across the Ottawa river as the sun set with good sunset colours. I got lucky, with the sun just as it was hitting the horizon, the snowdrift in front of me lit up beautifully.

Cattle Corral at Blue Hour in -30 ... Brrrr
I decided to go and check out one of my favourite little spots, a small cattle corral south of Ottawa where I live. The winds were blowing pretty strongly creating a wind chill of -30. The snow storm was just coming to an end and with the winds over the past 36 hours combined with light fluffy fresh snow I found what I was looking for, some nice lines in the fresh snow. This is a two row, nine column panoramic image. After stitching the resulting sixty images together, this is now a whopping 165MP image.

Early Morning Golden Goodness at Mer Bleue I
This scene is a very high resolution multi-column and multi-row panoramic image made up from a total of 90 images. The high clouds were moving quickly. Within about 5 minutes, the sun was hidden behind the clouds enough that the effect on the cattails was gone. In the end I'm very happy I managed to capture a couple of great shots in one morning. Lately I have been going out and not even taking the camera out of the bag. This morning was a treat!

Early Morning Golden Goodness at Mer Bleue II
It's so nice to be able to sleep in (relatively speaking), and still have more than enough time to get out to capture blue hour before sunrise, and we fully prepared for the golden hour when it arrives. The ice was nice and thick this morning when I went for a hike out in Mer Bleue. I set the tripod down a little bit lower to be able to soften the bright morning sun, with the bullrushes.

Getting Close to the Edge - Ottawa River, Ottawa, ON
I'm always looking for new and interesting locations around Ottawa to capture. This was taken just before sunset on a cool December evening looking away from the sunset to capture the alpen glow in the sky. I really liked how the ice was very thin around the bolder in the river, and how the ice disappeared towards the island allowing for some nice reflections from the bare trees on the island in the middle of the river.

Rising Moon Over the Piers II - Prescott, Ontario
For this version of the image, I chose a square crop. This scene was captured early on a winters evening, shortly after the sun had set during blue hour. This location is in Prescott, about one hours drive south of where I live in Ottawa, Ontario.
